The gulf coast...from the cackling gulls, to the soaring pelicans, to the playful dolphins, to the gentle salt water breezes...for many people, myself included, there is just no other place quite like it!  

Nestled about in those beautiful waters is the stuff of legends...well, at least to those who chase them.  We are talking about the Holy Grail of bay fishing...speckled trout, redfish, and flounder.  The sportfishing status of these fish is regarded so highly, that catching all three within a day of fishing is called a “Grand Slam.”

Just returned from a wonderful trip to South Padre Island!  This was going to be my time to finally catch my first fish on my saltwater fly equipment!  So, what did I catch on fly?  Nothing!  I only had one morning to try to fly fish, and woke up to lightning in the area.  I still tried to fish some, after waiting on the bank of the bay for about 1 hour, but then the wind started to pick up and...well...there went my opportunity.  Oh well...there’s always next time!   

I did get to fish the surf though, several times!  Thank the good Lord for whiting!  They kept me busy, easily catching 10+ each time I went out!  Pompano and Spanish Mackeral rounded out the fishing.  It was FUN!
